The Mauritanian Iron Ore Train: The World’s Most Extreme Railway Adventure

A Giant Crossing the Sahara

Deep in the heart of the Sahara Desert, one of the world’s most extraordinary railway journeys crosses the endless sands of Mauritania. Stretching more than 700 kilometers from the mining town of Zouérat to the Atlantic port of Nouadhibou, the Mauritanian Iron Ore Train is not simply a freight railway — it is a symbol of survival, industry, adventure, and national identity.

Known globally as one of the longest and heaviest operational trains in the world, the Iron Ore Train has become legendary among adventure travelers seeking one of the last truly raw and authentic overland experiences on Earth. At the same time, it remains one of the most important economic lifelines of Mauritania, carrying millions of tons of iron ore across the Sahara every year.

The Scale of the Giant

Operated by SNIM (Société Nationale Industrielle et Minière), the train’s scale is astonishing. A single convoy can extend between 2.5 and 3 kilometers in length and may include more than 200 wagons carrying up to 17,000 tons of iron ore. The journey across the Sahara usually takes between 18 and 20 hours, moving slowly through isolated desert landscapes at approximately 35 to 40 kilometers per hour.

The railway officially opened in 1963, shortly after Mauritania’s independence, to solve a major challenge: transporting enormous quantities of ore from the remote desert to the coast for export to international markets.

The Route Through the Desert

The journey begins in Zouérat, a mining town surrounded by industrial facilities and desert mountains rich in iron deposits. From there, the railway cuts across vast stretches of barren desert, passing through remote settlements like Fderik and Choum before reaching Nouadhibou on the Atlantic coast.

For travelers, Choum is a popular boarding point. The landscapes along the way are among the harshest in Africa—endless plains of rock and sand where the Sahara glows under intense sunlight by day and a sea of stars by night.

Riding the Iron Ore Train

The train became internationally famous for the extreme way many travelers experience it: riding directly on top of the iron ore itself. For decades, adventurous backpackers have climbed into the open freight wagons to cross the Sahara beneath the open sky.

This experience is physically demanding. There is no shelter, and travelers are exposed to strong winds, freezing nights, and thick clouds of black iron dust. Fine particles cover everything, turning clothes and skin black. Travelers often wear turbans, goggles, and heavy layers to protect themselves. Despite the hardship, watching the sunset over the Sahara from a moving freight wagon is an experience few modern journeys can offer.

Economic Importance

While the train is an adventure icon, its true role is economic. Iron ore is the backbone of Mauritania’s economy. The country is one of Africa’s leading producers, exporting millions of tons annually to Europe and China. The railway is an essential artery connecting remote mines to global trade networks, supporting thousands of jobs and sustaining entire communities in northern Mauritania.

A Journey Unlike Any Other

The Mauritanian Iron Ore Train is far more than a means of transportation. It is a moving symbol of a country shaped by the Sahara, industry, and resilience. For travelers, it offers a rare opportunity to disconnect from modern comfort and experience the raw beauty of the desert in its purest form.

Few journeys combine industrial power, extreme landscapes, and personal challenge in such a powerful way. That is why the Iron Ore Train remains one of the world’s last truly legendary railway adventures.
